Check Your Skin

  • Get naked, grab a mirror and a friend.

Look everywhere-the soles of your feet, your back, and your scalp. A husband/wife or friend can help check difficult to see places.

  • Use the ABCDE method. Check your moles for:

    • Asymmetry: One side looks different from the other
    • Border: Edges should be smooth
    • Color: All moles should be one even color
    • Diameter: Should be smaller than a circumference of a pencileraser
    • Evolving: Look for any change, such as bleeding or itching
  • MAP IT or SNAP IT!

Keep track of your moles by mapping them. Blank maps are available at aad.org or photograph moles you want to watch.
  • Report changes to your doctor. Schedule your annual dermatologist visit.
  • Learn from your clinical skin exam and do a self-exam after your clinical, so you can compare in a month.
